Food Intolerance
Food Allergy or Food Intolerance?
Did you know?
Food allergies and food intolerances can cause similar symptoms – but they have different causes and require different treatments.
Food Intolerance
- The immune system reacts to specific proteins in food
- Symptoms usually occur quickly – within minutes to a few hours after eating
- skin rash, itching, swelling, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal symptoms
- Anaphylactic shock can occur as a life-threatening complication
- Diagnosis through skin tests, blood tests and oral food challenges
- Treatment includes allergen avoidance and potencial emergency medication
Food Intolerance
- No immune system involvement
- Caused by enzyme deficiencies or metabolic issues
- Symptoms often appear later – hours or even days after eating
- Common signs: bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, headaches
- Diagnosis through elimination diets and specific tests depending on the suspected cause
- Treatment includes tailored diet and, in some cases, enzyme supplements
How to tell the difference:
- Allergies can be life-threatening and typically develop rapidly
- Intolerances are usually less acute but can significantly impact quality of life
- Always seek medical advice if symptoms occur after eating!
