Long COVID
Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
More than just tiredness.
Did you know?
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a serious neuroimmunological condition. It can be triggered by infections such as COVID-19 and persist for weeks or even months afterward.
A hallmark symptom is a severe intolerance to exertion, often followed by post-exertional malaise (PEM).
- Even minimal physical or mental activity can lead to a significant worsening of symptoms
- Recovery can take days or even weeks
- Rest alone often does not bring relief
Common symptoms include:
- Severe and persistent fatigue
- Concentration and memory problems (“brain fog”)
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle and joint pain, headaches
- Sleep disturbances
- Circulatory and autonomic issues (e.g. dizziness)
What can help?
- Pacing – energy management to avoid overexertion
- Rest and tailored activity planning
- Good sleep hygiene
- Nutritional support
- Symptom-based medical care
- Connecting with support groups and communities
What family and friends should know:
- This illness is real and can be very disabling
- People affected need understanding, rest, and support
- Fatigue is not just “being tired” – it can be physically paralyzing
- Encouraging activity can do more harm than good
